Jeff Stelling says 27-year-old midfielder brings something no one else does to Manchester United

Jeff Stelling believes Scott McTominay brings something to Manchester United that not many of his teammates do.

Manchester United’s optimism after a promising start to 2024 came crashing back down to Earth on Saturday.

Erik ten Hag’s side had gone seven games unbeaten to start the year and Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos Group finally took official charge of football operations last week.

However, United were given a rude awakening by Fulham who left Old Trafford with a 2-1 thanks to Alex Iwobi’s 97th minute winner.

It was a dreadful display from United which has seen Ten Hag come under fire and many of the players face stiff criticism.

There has been speculation that several players could be sold in the summer as part of Ineos’ rebuild but Scott McTominay shouldn’t be one of them.

That’s according to Jeff Stelling who believes the midfielder brings a unique quality to the squad.

Jeff Stelling praises Scott McTominay

In conversation with Ally McCoist on TalkSPORT, the pair were discussing which players United should get rid of when the conversation turned to McTominay.

McCoist said: “I’m keeping him all day.”

To which Stelling continued: “It’s his attitude though that would mean that you would keep him because when he’s on the pitch.

“Unlike one or two of the United squad, he gives it all and you can see he gives it all. I would keep him as well.”

Should Man United keep Scott McTominay?

Talk is once again turning to United needing a massive rebuild to fix all their problems but haven’t they been ‘rebuilding’ for the last decade? Isn’t Ten Hag still in the middle of his?

United have spent hundreds upon hundreds of millions of pounds on players no one thought were bad when they were signed, but are now.

That’s clearly a problem that needs to be resolved through coaching, not necessarily throwing yet more cash at it.

Regardless of whether United want to rebuild or not, any hope of getting rid of a large number of players in one go is unrealistic unless the club is willing to swallow massive losses.

Instead, the focus should be on trying to get the best out of all the talent in the squad.

McTominay may not be the most technically gifted of players, but he does bring a different dimension to the side that can be useful and he has earned his spot this season.
