Jamie Carragher gives verdict on Man Utd’s ‘worst’ signing, his main strengths remain a mystery

Manchester United worked hard to offload players during the summer.

In most cases, it was a struggle to move players on as many deals ran into the final week of the transfer window.

Alejandro Garnacho and Antony secured permanent moves away from Manchester United, while Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho left on loan.

Ruben Amorim decided which players were deemed surplus to requirements as he attempts to rebuild the team for future success.

United signed five new players during the summer, including Senne Lammens on deadline day.

After years of questionable recruitment, Ineos will hope it can learn from the mistakes United made in the past.

Jamie Carragher slams Jadon Sancho as Man Utd’s ‘worst’ signing

The summer saw United try to fix multiple missteps in the transfer market from previous years.

That includes spending big money on Antony and Sancho, only for those players to flop.

Now, after joining Aston Villa on loan for the season, Sancho has been accused of having little ability in a brutal attack from former Liverpool defender turned pundit Jamie Carragher.

The 25-year-old has not played for United since last season’s Community Shield penalty shoot-out defeat to Man City.

Speaking on The Overlap, United fan Adam McKola described Sancho as the club’s ‘worst ever’ signing, after costing the Red Devils £73 million from Borussia Dortmund in 2021.

In response, Carragher accused Sancho of lacking any real ability and claimed the winger has no major strengths.

“It’s funny with Sancho because he got the reputation with Borussia Dortmund,” Carragher said.

“Me and Gary [Neville] were on Sky Sports a few years ago and we hadn’t seen much of him but he was doing really well at Dortmund in the Champions League.

“We got asked to come up with an England squad and we didn’t put him in and got some stick on social media.

“When you say he’s the worst Man Utd signing because of his ability… I’m not sure there’s much ability there. I think he’s okay but I don’t understand what his thing is. I’ve been critical of Marcus Rashford but if I picture him playing well I can picture his pace and his shooting.

“I don’t know what Sancho’s thing is. Every player has something but I can’t think in my head what he does. I’ve never seen it in my life. I haven’t.”

Sancho’s switch to Villa went down to the wire on deadline day. He will be hoping to resurrect his career at Villa Park.

When can Sancho make his Aston Villa debut?

Aston Villa are back in Premier League action on Saturday when they travel to Merseyside to face Everton.

That game may come too soon for Sancho, which means that he may be made to wait for the Carabao Cup third round tie against Brentford next Tuesday.

Otherwise, Sancho could make his debut against Sunderland, Bologna or Fulham in the coming weeks.

Sancho may take time to reach full match sharpness after missing out on pre-season training all summer.
