TNT Sports pundit Paul Scholes had an incredibly telling reaction to a huge question that Jamie Carragher asked him about Manchester United and Ruben Amorim.
Ruben Amorim has entered his first full season in charge at Old Trafford after arriving from Sporting CP during the 2024-25 Premier League campaign.
United suffered a complete collapse in form under Erik ten Hag last season and the Dutchman’s sacking paved the way for Amorim’s appointment last November.
Amorim has had his first full pre-season with the Red Devils after United’s disastrous 2024-25 season, which ended with the Premier League club in 15th place.
However, the 40-year-old United manager has already had a bumpy start to the 2025-26 season after a mixed set of results in the opening four matches.

Jamie Carragher put Paul Scholes on the spot with a big prediction claim for Man Utd and Ruben Amorim
Manchester United are ninth in the Premier League table after their first three league matches, with the Red Devils winning one, losing one and picking up a draw.
Ineos have already outlined its ambition to lead United back to the top of English football after Sir Jim Ratcliffe captured a minority stake in the Premier League club.
United CEO Omar Berrada has echoed the sentiments with the bold ‘Project 150’ plan, which aims for the Red Devils to win the Premier League title by 2028.
Speaking on The Overlap, Jamie Carragher directly asked Paul Scholes if he could see the Red Devils winning the title at some point under Ruben Amorim’s system.
However, the 50-year-old United legend took a deep pause before he eventually suggested that the Red Devils are simply struggling to win matches under Amorim.
“It’s [the system] struggling to win games at the minute rather than win a Premier League [title],” Scholes told Jamie Carragher. “I’m struggling to find [positives] […].”
Paul Scholes makes his feelings clear to Jamie Carragher on the Man Utd tactical system used under Ruben Amorim
Scholes touched on Amorim’s tactical system at United and the former Red Devils midfielder admitted that the manager’s approach still remains “alien to everyone.”
Speaking on Amorim and United, he continued: “This system… it’s all systems, isn’t it?
“It is alien, it is alien to everyone, really; I think it is, especially in English football.
“There’s… I don’t remember seeing his… [it was] very simple 4-3-3, 4-4-2 [in my day]. People do play three at the back. And I’ve said it since he’s started, Man United for some reason, three at the back is just not them.”
Scholes added: “I don’t know what it is. As I said, I remember our manager tried it, Sir Alex. Yeah, we haven’t got those wide players who can attack and can entertain.
“We’re playing wing-backs who… [Diogo] Dalot, he’s a wing-back, sorry, he’s a [right-back].
“This system, for some reason. I don’t know if it is the system or what, but you do have those little spells of looking really good, exciting, and then have spells which are so bad.”
United will travel to the Etihad after the September international break and the Red Devils will face Manchester City in the first derby match of the 2025-26 season.
