Could James Garner be under consideration for a first ever Manchester United start this weekend?
United’s options in midfield remain light, with Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic still out injured.
Scott McTominay, Paul Pogba and Fred started against Barcelona. At least one could drop out against West Ham with the second leg at the Nou Camp taking place on Tuesday.
Andreas Pereira would be next in line to step up. If Solskjaer rests two, then James Garner could be drafted in.
So close to a chance
Garner made his competitive debut for United in the final few minutes of the win over Crystal Palace.
Days later he was rewarded with a new contract until 2022.
Solskjaer compared Garner to Michael Carrick and told United’s official website: “There’ll be more chances for Jimmy.”
Garner trained with the first team ahead of the Barcelona tie, the Manchester Evening News reported.
Former boss Louis van Gaal criticised Solskjaer last month for giving minutes to young players as a token gesture, and not starting opportunities.
West Ham should not be taken lightly, but it’s also time for Solskjaer to show some more faith in the young talent.
There’s a real opportunity to give Garner a start this weekend and rest key players for Barcelona.
