And in an instant, Sancho propelled himself back into manager Erik ten Hag’s good books.
A week ago in Cyrpus, Sancho was substituted at half-time after a poor 45 minutes. He was then left as an unused substitute against Everton at the weekend.
In addition to losing his place in the United side, his fading England hopes appeared to be evaporating. This night might just have got him back on track.
Sancho gets back in Ten Hag’s good books
Sancho was sent on midway through the second half against Omonia with Manchester United labouring towards a draw.
He came on with Luke Shaw and together the pair linked up well. Attempts to connect with Marcus Rashford did not work quite as well.
Sancho did not give up, and whenever he got on the ball he was looking to make something happen, and wasn’t wasteful.
He showed fantastic composure as he dribbled through a desperate and packed out penalty box in injury time.
Many players would have taken the moment to shoot themselves, Sancho fizzed the ball in towards McTominay, who struck it into the back of the net.
This was a moment Sancho needed, after a fairly difficult week. But he didn’t panic, keeping a calm head when Manchester United needed somebody to.
It was the second week in a row that Erik ten Hag’s substitutes had turned the game in United’s favour. The Dutchman will be pleased with Sancho, and for him.
Ahead of a crucial stretch of Premier League fixtures, Sancho is back in contention for a starting spot.
