Jadon Sancho adds to growing reputation as big match player with crucial Manchester United goal

Jadon Sancho nearly blew the roof off Old Trafford with a composed opening goal to put Manchester United 1-0 up against Liverpool.

The winger has not wholly convinced since his £73 million move for Borussia Dortmund in 2021, and this was the biggest moment of his Manchester United career to date.

Still only 22, Sancho is building an impressive reputation for stepping up and delivering in big matches. He did it for Borussia Dortmund and is beginning to do so for Manchester United.

The goal against Liverpool showed real quality, composure inside the box to sit James Milner down, and pass into the bottom corner.

Sancho a big match player

Jadon Sancho’s goal against Liverpool was the first time he had scored against them (aside from pre-season). No Manchester United player scored against Jurgen Klopp’s side last season.

This goal adds to strikes last season against Chelsea and Manchester City, two huge matches. He also provided an assist in the win over Arsenal.

Sancho scored his first United goal in an important Champions League away win against a Villarreal side who went on to reach the semi-finals.

This follows on from an impressive record for Borussia Dortmund during his time there.

Sancho scored in big European games against Sevilla and Barcelona, in the Bundesliga against Bayern Munich, and in the German Cup final against RB Leipzig.

The talent is clearly there, and one of Erik ten Hag’s tasks is to harness Sancho’s undoubted ability and get him to produce on a consistent basis.

Consider his young age, 22, and the impressive list of teams he has scored against, it’s clear Manchester United have a special player who will continue to grow, and step up when it matters.
