Jaap Stam reacts to Erik ten Hag being named Manchester United's new manager

Jaap Stam has urged Manchester United to give new manager Erik ten Hag time to implement his style at the club.

The Dutchman has been appointed as United’s new permanent manager and he will take up the position once he finishes the season with current side Ajax.

The 52-year-old is the fifth permanent manager to be appointed at Old Trafford since Sir Alex Ferguson retired nine years ago.

United have been without a permanent manager since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in November and Ralf Rangnick was appointed as interim boss until the end of the season later that month.

United’s former centre-back Stam believes that ten Hag will look to try and implement the same philosophy he produced at Ajax at the Theatre of Dreams.

Stam said: “To do the same in Premier League of course you need to spend money to bring in players of a certain ability because they need to fit into his philosophy of playing and what he is trying to do in Holland.

“He’s probably going to do try and do the same in England at Manchester of course.

“Is it easy? No, the quality of teams against you is going to be much higher and I think it will be more difficult to do this and be as dominant as he was at Ajax with Manchester United.

“You need to have time for this. Do you get time? That’s always the issue for the coach as a club, the people within the club there saying ‘yeah you will get time and going to back you up because it’s a new project.

“But you know how it goes from the outside and everybody knows that if you’re working for a team that is one of the biggest in the world then every season you need to compete for trophies – you don’t have time to build and then have a very bad season.

“You need to find that balance to use the players that you have in now, the players that you are keen on as a new coach by adding players and hopefully implement your playing style to get results throughout that season.”
