Italian press react to Andre Onana performance for Manchester United v Galatasaray

Manchester United pushed hard to sign Andre Onana this summer for Inter Milan and eventually got their man.

Andre Onana was supposed to be the revolutionary goalkeeper who could implement manager Erik ten Hag‘s preferred style and be an upgrade on Erik ten Hag. We pass no judgment on whether this can work long-term, other than to say, right now, it’s not working.

Onana is getting lost in the pressure of Old Trafford, making high-profile errors in both Champions League games this season.

For a player who reached the final with Inter Milan last season, it’s unexpected. Last night he conceded three goals against Galatasaray and caused the concession of a penalty, which led to a Casemiro red card.

Worryingly, it was Onana’s passing which caused this error. That was supposed to be his strong point.

Andre Onana errors

Andre Onana’s troubled spell of form is attracting attention in Italy, where he played his football with Inter Milan last season, and was highly acclaimed as one of Serie A’s top goalkeepers.

Calciomercato ran the brutal headline: “Onana, another madness risks costing United the Champions League: a 55 million failure.”

Their report adds: “Manchester United’s crisis is profound and seems unstoppable. And the face of this disaster is that of André Onana, once again a protagonist – in a negative way – of the horrors of Erik Ten Hag’s team.”

Eurosport Italia reported simply: “Nightmare evening for Onana”, while Passione Inter ran the video of his error, reporting: “What a mistake.”

Goal Italia added: “That André Onana is not experiencing peaceful weeks in red Manchester is clear to everyone. Terrible results from the team, mistakes from the former Inter goalkeeper: the negative aspects, since his transfer from Milan, are almost countless.”

Manchester United have to try and turn this situation around

It isn’t going to get easier for Andre Onana. He has to push through this, and find a way to restore his confidence, and gain the confidence of his teammates.

Erik ten Hag has a decision to make in the short-term, whether to take Onana out of the firing line, this weekend against Brentford, and bring in either Tom Heaton or Altay Bayindir.
