Manchester United have finally announced Jose Mourinho’s departure. It was better late than never for many fans, but what could it mean for the players currently at Old Trafford?
Some will get a second chance, while others could find their faltering form pushing them into the cold.
One such player is Nemanja Matic. The Serbian was a favourite of Mourinho, but his performances this season have been poor.
Despite failing to replicate the showings of his debut campaign, Matic was picked time and again. But do not expect that to continue. Signed for £40million (BBC) he has gone from integral to ineffective.
That should have been the way under Mourinho. The fact it wasn’t was a big part of the problem.
Matic faltered at Chelsea and the same is happening at United. On his day he can dominate most Premier League midfields, but those days are now few and far between.
United cannot afford to carry any passengers as they attempt to put the Mourinho era behind them. When it comes to Matic, he has been carried for too long.
It is a new era under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – albeit a potentially brief one – and expect big changes in team selection as a result.
