Wayne Rooney has dropped a powerful assessment on Manchester United after the Red Devils successfully defeated Premier League side Tottenham 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Manchester United hosted Tottenham at Old Trafford and the Red Devils broke the deadlock in the first half after Bryan Mbeumo’s expert finish into the bottom corner of the net.

The Red Devils took a 1-0 lead into the half-time break, while Spurs were reduced to 10 men in the first half after Cristian Romero’s straight red-card challenge.

Tottenham were unable to rally back against United after the break and the Red Devils added the final nail in the coffin to Spurs’ hopes late in the second half.

Diogo Dalot whipped a sensational cross into the box from the right and an onrushing Bruno Fernandes drilled the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.

Wayne Rooney on what he has spotted about Man Utd under Michael Carrick’s reign after the Tottenham result

Manchester United have now won four consecutive Premier League matches since Michael Carrick took charge at Old Trafford as interim head coach last month.

The Red Devils are fourth in the Premier League table and Michael Carrick’s men are only three points behind third-place Aston Villa after their latest result on Saturday.

Speaking after Man Utd’s 2-0 win over Tottenham, Red Devils icon Wayne Rooney talked up the “biggest thing” that he has noticed about Carrick’s in-form side.

“Yeah, and he’s [Carrick] been incredible,” he said on BBC Sport’s The Wayne Rooney Show.

“I think the biggest thing I could say is I’m enjoying watching Man United play and there’s a buzz around the football club, which hasn’t been for a long, long time.

“So, it’s… I think that’s a huge pat on the back for Michael and for all of his coaches [that] he’s brought in.

“Because I was at the… what game [was] it? The previous game, the Fulham game, and it just suits him.

“It suits [me] when you look down in the dugout and he’s stood there. He’s got a calmness about him.”

Wayne Rooney on Michael Carrick as the Man Utd interim head coach

Michael Carrick has chalked up victories over Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham and Tottenham after turning around the Red Devils’ erratic form under Ruben Amorim.

United legend Rooney insisted that former Red Devils and England teammate Carrick is now in the perfect position to challenge for the permanent head coach role.

Who was your Manchester United man of the match against Spurs?

“He’s making the right decisions, the right changes at the right time and, obviously, they’ve won the first four games,” he added.

“So, you just hope he keeps the performances up, keeps getting results and almost forces Man United to make decisions to give him the job.

“But yeah, as I said, there’s a long way to go in the season, and if he could make Champions League football for next season and stay in [those] positions, and look, you never know, [Man] City aren’t that far away in second place.

“So, you just [have] to keep going game by game and hope. And if he does that, and stays in a position where he is now in the league, I think it’d be very difficult for the Man United bosses not to give him the job.”

Man Utd will return to Premier League action on Tuesday evening now, with the Red Devils travelling to the London Stadium to face West Ham.
