Manchester United have a special talent with youngster Kobbie Mainoo, who starred against Luton.
Kobbie Mainoo is an automatic pick in Manchester United’s midfield, and has started in every single game in 2024 so far.
On Sunday he was selected in the team to face Luton Town, a frenetic game where Manchester United started fast and then were put under pressure for much of the match.
While Casemiro was hooked at half-time after picking up a yellow card, Mainoo kept his composure in the tricky away fixture, which United won 2-1.
Ian Wright praises Kobbie Mainoo
Kobbie Mainoo‘s performance was highlighted by pundit and former Premier League striker Ian Wright.
Wright called on Mainoo’s displays to be recognised in the forthcoming England squads.
Wright wrote on X: “Kobbie Mainoo has to be in the next England squad. Such maturity in chaotic conditions that we’ve not seen from a England player in a long time. Impressed every time I watch him.”
Mainoo is eligible to play for England or Ghana. He has represented England at youth level.
Gary Lineker agreed, writing in reply: “Agreed @IanWright0. What a fabulous young player.”
Mainoo worthy but lack of spotlight may suit United
Genuinely, if picking England’s best squad for Euro 2024, then Kobbie Mainoo should absolutely be in there.
Some might argue he should form part of the starting XI along with Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice in midfield.
Gareth Southgate may prefer his old favourites of Jordan Henderson and Kalvin Phillips. If he does that, England have no chance.
But from a selfish perspective, Manchester United will be quite happy if Kobbie Mainoo is overlooked.
A quiet summer to rest up after a strong season would be a positive for Mainoo, to start again next season.
