Michael Carrick made an instant impact as Manchester United’s head coach, and he is looking to take a big step forward in 2026/27.

Since Michael Carrick returned to Old Trafford, no Premier League team has earned more points than Manchester United.

United have aspirations to win the Premier League in the next two years, and now that Carrick’s appointment has been made permanent, the responsibility lies with him.

Last season, Carrick’s style of play was built around fluid counter-attacking and intricate passages of play in midfield. Next season, he is looking to make some interesting changes.

Michael Carrick’s tactical changes for 2026/27

It is no secret that United are investing heavily in their midfield department this summer, and Carrick’s tactical approach in midfield could change.

According to The Sun, Carrick wants United to assemble a midfield trio based on Paris Saint-Germain’s dynamic setup.

It is widely believed that the trio of Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz and Joao Neves is the strongest midfield in European football, and Carrick wants to use them as a benchmark for United’s rebuild.

PSG tend to play in a 4-3-3 formation under United-linked Luis Enrique, while Carrick uses a 4-2-3-1 formation.

However, a move to a midfield three cannot be ruled out. Captain Bruno Fernandes has experience playing deeper, including his current role in the Portugal squad.

Kobbie Mainoo’s new role under Michael Carrick

The midfield rebuild at United is centered around Kobbie Mainoo, who has enjoyed a resurgence under Carrick.

Mainoo played in a double pivot alongside Casemiro in 2025/26, but next season he will have new partners, and potentially a new setup.

The Sun report from above claims that Carrick wants Mainoo to “start attacking spaces in behind defences” in order to become a more rounded midfielder.

Mainoo only scored one goal last season, and Carrick is demanding more from the Carrington graduate.

Last season, Mainoo’s defending improved drastically, and Carrick is the right coach to fulfil his exciting potential.
