Manchester United have improved in 2025/26 to currently rank third in the Premier League table. How does it compare?
It has certainly been a rollercoaster ride for Manchester United during the post-Ferguson era. The 2025/26 season has been fairly chaotic itself, with Ruben Amorim, Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick all taking charge of the team.
In recent weeks Carrick has led United to third place in the Premier League after 31 games.
We have compared the league position and points total to United’s record in previous seasons at the 31 game mark.

Here’s a look at how the table currently stands… where will United finish?
United after 31 games: Key takeaways
Manchester United deserve huge recognition for the turnaround after a wretched 2024/25 season. United were 14th at this stage last season, and went on to finish in 15th.
- United have 13 more points after 31 games in 2025/26 than the finishing total in 2024/25.
- This is the highest league placing after 31 games than the club’s second place in 2020/21.
- United are still 13 points worse off than the 68 points after 31 games posted under Jose Mourinho in 2017/18.
- United are four points better off than under David Moyes in 2013/14… but four places higher.
In total this is the fifth best season of the post-Ferguson era after 31 games based on points total.
- Higher than 8 seasons: 2013/14, 2015/16, 2016/17, 2018/19, 2019/20, 2021/22, 2023/24, and 2024/25.
- Lower than 4 seasons: 2014/15, 2017/18, 2020/21, and 2022/23.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s record
A further comparison can be made against Sir Alex Ferguson’s spell as manager. We are only taking a sample from 1995/96 onwards, when the Premier League switched to a 38-game season in 1995/96.
Between 95/96 and his retirement in 2012/13, Ferguson bettered this season’s point tally after 31 matches in every season.
During this period, the lowest Ferguson finished was third. That seems like a best possible outcome in 2025/26, but it is still an unthinkable high compared with 2024/25.
