How Andre Onana has changed behind the scenes at Man Utd over the past month

Andre Onana has been a man transformed at Manchester United since that last-gasp penalty save against FC Copenhagen in the Champions League.

Erik ten Hag was keen to point out, during the goalkeeper’s difficult start to life at Old Trafford, that neither David de Gea nor Peter Schmeichel flew out of the blocks in a Manchester United shirt either.

And as Andre Onana sprang to his left to claw away a Copenhagen penalty with the last kick of the game in late-October – ensuring that Harry Maguire’s 76th minute header would be the winning goal after all – there were shades of the moment which lit a fire under De Gea’s United career.

The Spaniard also found himself under considerable pressure after a couple of high-profile mistakes at the start of 2011/12. That was until he pushed aside a Robin van Persie spot-kick with United 1-0 up at home to Arsenal, a game that would eventually end – as you might remember – in an 8-2 thrashing no one at either club will forget in a hurry.

It is no coincidence that Onana has looked a man transformed since that coming-of-age moment four weeks ago, The Mirror reporting that the £47 million summer signing has been a ‘different person’ around Carrington ever since.

The confidence and the swagger has returned to his game. His head up high and his chest puffed out.

Successive Premier League clean sheets

“He showed personality. And he knows that before was not the levels what his skills are. He didn’t match his skills and he could do better,” Ten Hag told The Independent after denying Jordan Larsson in front of his legendary father Henrik and sparking jubilant celebrations at Old Trafford.

“Also, don’t forget that brilliant save just after half-time in the counter-attack. But, of course, that is one of his skills; he is a very good penalty saver.”

Onana will head to Everton this weekend on the back of successive clean sheets in the Premier League, though the outstanding international performances of Altay Bayindir during the November break should keep the suddenly in-form shot-stopper on his toes.
