Manchester United defender Rhys Bennett suffered an injury during pre-season but the youngster could finally be set to make a return.

Bennett, 19, picked up an injury against Leeds United which was reportedly described by United as a ‘minor injury’, this denied him the opportunity of making United’s USA tour squad.

According to a report from the Manchester Evening News, the defender is recovering well from an injury and could be back in first-team training soon.

“After a positive start back on the pitch, I have picked up a minor injury. Hopefully soon back out there playing,” the player wrote on social media after picking up his injury in the 2-0 friendly victory against the Yorkshire outfit.

Bennett is one for the future

The United defender, who captained the side in the FA Youth Cup final win against Nottingham Forest last year at Old Trafford, is reportedly highly rated by staff at the club.

The 19-year-old was an unused substitute against Nottingham Forest back in December and it seems he could be next on the production line of academy talent at Old Trafford.

The defender was rewarded with a new United contract following his progression within the academy so it will be a boost to have the defender back in the fold.

Could he feature in the future

For Bennett to be captain in the FA Youth Cup final, surely the defender has something to his game and could well be a success at Old Trafford.

After all, the defender lined up alongside Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo in the cup final and captained that young side and scored, too.

With the injury issues United are dealing with at centre-back, if the defender were to return to training soon, then he could be given more first-team opportunities if he continues to impress the coaching staff at Old Trafford.
