‘He was unbelievable’… BBC pundit says he watched Man Utd wonderkid last season and could not believe his quality

Former Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam has been full of praise for Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo after another composed performance.

Manchester United picked up a 3-2 victory over Unai Emery’s highflying Aston Villa side and were two goals down at half-time and things were looking bleak.

An Alejandro Garnacho double and an emotional winner from Rasmus Hojlund turned the game around but Kobbie Mainoo’s midfield performance deserves praise.

After the mistake he made in the capital against West Ham United at the London Stadium during the 2-0 defeat to the Hammers, it was a superb response from the 18-year-old who dealt with the Villa midfielder pretty much all on his own.

Adam on Mainoo

Charlie Adam, former Liverpool midfielder, spoke on BBC Radio 5 Live and was full of praise for the 18-year-old who is turning into one of the stars of this rather poor season.

“I watched him last season in the EFL Trophy against Fleetwood Town and he was unbelievable,” Adam said.

“I know it’s against League One opposition but he was running the game. For me, you could see the personality and you need that if you’re going to be playing for Manchester United.

“The trust he has from the first team group, they know he is going to be a top player. Erik ten Hag knows he’s got a top player on his hands but he just needs to know when to play him or take him out because youngsters will have dips.

“To come in and play for Manchester United when they’re going through a rough time, really highlights his attitude and the mentality that he has.”

Mainoo’s time

The midfielder looks composed beyond his years and did not look fazed when he was being pressed by the Villa midfield, which has arguably been one of the best in the Premier League.

When he was substituted he waved his arms to the crowd to get the noise levels up, he just gets what it means to play for United.

Garnacho is the same as the 18-year-old. The pair of them have superb mentalities and they should be mainstays within the Red Devils team for the rest of the season.
