Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt has criticised Alejandro Garnacho.

Alejandro Garnacho endured a humiliating showing for Chelsea in their defeat to Manchester United at the weekend.

Garnacho was totally ineffective against the Red Devils, who have now moved 10 points clear in the race for Champions League qualification.

His decision to push for a Manchester United exit last summer looks like a terrible mistake – as we warned at the time.

Now former Manchester United player and academy chief Nicky Butt has criticised his behaviour.

What is your message to Alejandro Garnacho after Man Utd do the double over Chelsea in 2025/26…

Alejandro Garnacho slammed

Nicky Butt quit his post at Manchester United in March 2021 after differences of opinion over the club’s restructure.

Alejandro Garnacho signed for United in summer 2020, and Butt has expressed his thoughts on their early interactions.

He told The Good, The Bad & The Football: “He signed at 16. I was academy manager at the time and he signed in a deal where they also signed Alvaro (Fernandez). Garnacho was always a bit stand-off-ish, he had a high opinion of himself.

Butt did say there was an element of this that he liked, adding: “I thought he had an edge about him. “

Then commenting on what he witnessed as Garnacho rose to the first team, Butt has questioned United’s handling of the winger, and strongly criticised the player.

He said: “When he got into the first team, I will just say what I think because I was there, and he got above his station way too quick. He got superstar status way too quick.

“And that’s not a former player saying they get paid too much, I hope young players get paid millions, but he got superstar status too quick and he obviously scored the bicycle kick which was phenomenal.

“Someone in that club or team at the time should have been swatting him down, and they might have been, and he ignored them.

“But the best thing Man United did was sell him because, forget his ability, and I don’t think he is that great anyway, but I thought his attitude was a disgrace when he was at Man United.”

Garnacho caused controversy with an outburst on social media and speaking critically to the foreign press after he was left out of Manchester United’s line-up for the Europa League Final.

Butt unhappy with Garnacho attitude

Nicky Butt believes Alejandro Garnacho has done himself a disservice with his actions since leaving Manchester United, where he claimed to have made a step up.

United’s players were happy to poke fun at him on social media after the win at Stamford Bridge.

Butt said: “More importantly when he left, and if you completely disrespect your teammates and the football club when you leave, then that’s it.

“He was 21 or whatever when he left the club but you can’t be up your own backside thinking you are as big or bigger than Man United.

“In an interview recently I watched it and he said ‘I thought I should have played every game…’

“I was thinking number one, you weren’t even that good, and number two you are young, be humble.”
