Hasenhuttl relaxed over Manchester United job links

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl is reportedly among the contenders to be Manchester United’s new long-term boss.

He also hit the headlines after United’s 1-1 draw with the Saints last month for making it clear that he felt his side could exploit the lack of running back in Ralf Rangnick’s side.

He said to Talksport: “It’s not a big secret that when they lose the ball the reverse gears are not the best from everyone.”

And now, as per the Independent, Hasenhuttl has commented on the prospect of managing in the Champions League.

He said: “You have to be very clear what you want in your life – and only then can you be happy with what you have.

“Different challenges are also interesting, no question. But I’m managing in the best league in the world, what more can you expect from a manager?

“I play against the best managers and best teams in the world and can compete with a young team. I also like to watch the Champions League during the week. But sometimes it’s easier to sit at home on the sofa, watch it relaxed and concentrate on the game at the weekend against one of these teams than to play (in it) yourself.

“This doesn’t mean I’m not looking for being successful. I’m also driven for success, but it’s important that you also know what you really want.”

That perhaps suggests that Hasenhuttl would be open to the prospect of moving to Old Trafford even if United were not in next season’s Champions League.

The Austrian has managed in Europe’s elite competition during his time at RB Leipzig, in the 2017/18 season.

Leipzig were drawn against Porto, Besiktas and Monaco, winning twice and drawing once to slip into the Europa League.

That is not huge European pedigree, but of course United are at a very real risk of missing out on the Champions League, which may have an impact on the club’s ability to attract the very best managers.
