Harry Maguire has urged Manchester United to be more clinical in the final third after their 1-0 victory over FC Copenhagen in the Champions League.
Erik ten Hag entrusted Harry Maguire to start the game alongside the returning Raphael Varane and the pair were arguably two of the best players during the game.
The English centre-back was man of the match against Sheffield United and followed that up with the winning goal against the Danish champions.
However, despite Maguire’s and Andre Onana’s heroics, the theme of the night was not being clinical with the plethora of chances United created.
Maguire on taking chances
Speaking to TNT Sports at full time, the defender was relieved with the victory but was, perhaps understandably, critical of the United attackers.
“Incredible. We have got to be more clinical, we had numerous counter-attacks and we didn’t give them a chance in the second-half,” Maguire said.
“The first-half was really poor, it was not perfect but an important win. This man [Andre Onana] stepped up and it was a massive save.”
Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford both had guilt-edged one-on-ones but both of these players fluffed their lines when the goal was at their mercy.
Maguire’s praise
The full-time whistle brought an outpouring of emotion not only to Onana but also Maguire who was, once again, sensational at Old Trafford.
The Stretford end were singing his name as he walked off the Old Trafford pitch and the defender spoke about the warm reception he received.
“It is amazing. When you are not on your game it gets picked up, but I am really proud and pleased how I have acted over this six to 12 months.
“I have been given an opportunity and I want to help the team and get the club back to where it should be.”
Maguire will need to be on his A-game against Erling Haaland on Sunday but judging on the current form of the defender, he could well deal with the Norwegian.
