Harry Maguire charged with improper conduct after Man Utd red card

Harry Maguire has been charged with improper conduct by the Football Association following his reaction to the red card he received against Bournemouth.

After Manchester United’s 2-2 draw against Bournemouth before the March international break, Michael Carrick was frustrated by some of the decisions that proved costly.

Harry Maguire was sent off, but Carrick’s frustration stemmed from Amad Diallo not getting a penalty at the other end for a similar foul.

Maguire will miss United’s next game against Leeds due to suspension, but the centre-back has now learned that he could miss an additional game.

Harry Maguire charged with improper conduct

Maguire was shown a red card in the 78th minute of United’s draw against Bournemouth last month, but his reaction to that dismissal could lead to his suspension being extended.

The 33-year-old centre-back was punished for bringing down Bournemouth striker Evanilson inside the box, even though referee Stuart Attwell ignored a similar foul in the opposite box when Amad was fouled.

Maguire, annoyed by the decision, confronted both Attwell and the fourth official, Matt Donohue.

A statement from The FA read, as per Simon Stone: “Harry Maguire has been charged after being sent off in the 78th minute of Man Utd’s Premier League match against Bournemouth on March 20.

“It’s alleged that the defender acted in an improper manner and/or abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour towards the fourth official following his dismissal. Harry Maguire has until April 2 to provide a response.”

The worst-case scenario for United would be for Maguire to get an extra suspension. At the very least, he’s likely to get a fine for his protests.

What did Bruno Fernandes say about Harry Maguire’s red card?

Carrick wasn’t the only one annoyed by Attwell’s decisions last time out.

United captain Bruno Fernandes also aired his frustration, saying (via The Mirror): “We get a penalty against [us] where more or less it’s the same situation as Amad. One is rewarded as a penalty, the other one not.

“I know it’s difficult for the referee to give two penalties in the same game for the same team but what I don’t understand is why VAR doesn’t get involved in that situation. Either one is a penalty and the other one too or none of them is a penalty.”
