Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes react as Manchester United confirm signing of Wout Weghorst

Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes have reacted on Instagram as Manchester United sign Wout Weghorst on loan.

The club have confirmed the arrival of the Dutch international, although he will not be registered in time for today’s Manchester derby.

It was clear that United would not spend big on a new striker this month and last weekend it became clear that Weghorst was the top pick.

John Murtough, United’s football director, said: ”Wout has a consistent goalscoring record across several European leagues, and his attributes will add a further dimension to our squad for the remainder of the season.”

“We were also attracted by his strong personality and dedicated approach to football, which fits perfectly with the spirit that Erik is building within our squad. He has shown a huge desire to join Manchester United and be part of what we’re striving to achieve this season.”

When United confirmed the news on Instagram, club captain Harry Maguire left a comment underneath to welcome the new man to Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes, who has worn the armband for much of the season and is likely to do so again today against City, also posted on his story to welcome Weghorst.

Weghorst could well make his debut against Crystal Palace on Wednesday night in that rearranged game at Selhurst Park.

After his move was confirmed, he said: “I feel privileged to be joining Manchester United. I’ve played against the club in the past and it’s a fantastic feeling to now have the chance to pull on the famous red shirt. I’ve seen United’s progress under Erik ten Hag this season and can’t wait to start playing my part in pushing the team towards its aims.

“Whatever happens in the next few months, I can promise to give everything to the club for as long as I am here. I thank everyone who has played a part in getting me to this stage, and now I am looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and getting involved straight away.”

There will be some pundits and fans who sneer at Weghorst because he comes from Burnley, but before he moved to Turf Moor, he was banging in the goals in the Bundesliga and was being talked about as an option for top Premier League clubs.

United have managed to get a player of that calibre in at a relatively low cost fairly early in the window, and now it is time for Weghorst to show what he can do.
