Graham Potter wowed by one Man United star’s ‘masterclass’ performance against Aston Villa

Graham Potter has been keeping a keen eye on Manchester United games in recent weeks.

The former Brighton and Chelsea boss has been suggested as one of the potential replacements for Erik ten Hag if the Dutchman was sacked.

It was a crucial week for Erik ten Hag, who was given two games to turn things around by Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

The chaotic draw to Porto on Thursday night didn’t sway United’s hierarchy either way, which meant all eyes were on United’s trip to Villa Park on Sunday afternoon.

However, United put on a resilient performance against Villa and picked up a point in a 0-0 draw. Ten Hag’s future continues to hang in the balance, and Graham Potter continues to watch and wait.

Graham Potter blown away by Man United ‘masterclass’

Potter has been doing some well-timed punditry work amid rumours that Ten Hag is under pressure. Potter was asked if he had held talks over the United job last week.

He was back in the studio for United’s goalless draw at Villa Park, and he admitted he was impressed with one United player in particular.

When asked about Jonny Evans’ Man of the Match display, Potter told BBC Match of the Day 2: “Sometimes in football it’s less important to be fast and more important to be on time.

“And in the right position on time.

“For any young defenders watching, this was almost a masterclass in how to use your strengths and combat what the opponent can do to you.”

Jonny Evans starred against Aston Villa

Eyebrows raised and jaws dropped when Ten Hag named a centre-back partnership of Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans against Villa.

The Dutchman decided to drop Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt to the bench after their horror show against Porto, and it turned out to be a stroke of genius.

Evans was the star of the show at centre-back and Maguire was equally as impressive before he was withdrawn at half-time with an injury.

United kept their fifth clean sheet of the season against Villa and Evans made a loud statement that he still has a part to play for the Red Devils this season.
