Former Manchester United and Millwall winger Gordon Hill has added to the widespread condemnation of hydration breaks at the World Cup.

The 2026 World Cup is in full swing, and many of Manchester United’s representatives in the US, Canada and Mexico have been in action for their countries.

It has also presented an opportunity to keep track of players United are keeping an eye on during the summer transfer window.

That said, the World Cup isn’t here without controversy because there has been that in abundance.

Gordon Hill slams World Cup hydration breaks

Perhaps one of the biggest talking points since the World Cup kicked off has been hydration breaks.

We’re already a week into this summer’s World Cup, and it’s still only getting started.

Football fans and pundits alike can’t stop talking about the hydration breaks, with many spectators at games now choosing to boo every cooling period.

While the weather across North America this summer will be extreme at times, with high temperatures and humidity making conditions more challenging for players on the pitch, it’s ridiculous to ignore that they’ve extended periods are another way to sell advertising and make more money from the World Cup.

FIFA’s ruling on the matter is that no matter the temperature or humidity in the stadium, the hydration breaks are mandatory, which has raised further questions.

The hydration breaks have irked former United winger Gordon Hill, who took to X to unleash a rant about the cooling periods as someone currently living in the US.

Hill wrote: “I am getting sick and tired of this so called water break s___. Do the bloody morons not understand that it takes away the advantage of the game if a team is on top.

“It then gives the other team time to regroup. This is not your sport so leave it alone. And stop bowing down.”

Ultimately, it’s just another culture clash at this World Cup.

Gordon Hill is not a fan of Thomas Tuchel

Hill shared a range of tweets after his rant about the hydration break.

He made it clear that although he is supporting England at the World Cup, he is not a fan of Thomas Tuchel.

“If Tuchel succeeds then everyone will say I told you so, and if he fails people will say I told you so.

“Just leave them alone to do a job. He picked them and that’s it.

“To me I am not a Tuchel fan. The players are the ones to make it work. We will see.”
