Wayne Rooney believes that one key first-team Manchester United player could have a transformative impact if Ruben Amorim brings in at least one more critical signing.

Ruben Amorim has welcomed four Red Devils signings through the doors of Old Trafford this summer as part of the Manchester United manager’s squad rebuild.

The 40-year-old Portuguese coach has been eager to clear out the deadwood from the United first-team squad and reinforce key positions ahead of the new season.

Amorim has seen a massive facelift with the Red Devils’ attacking options, with United signing the likes of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.

Joining Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo at Old Trafford has been Paraguayan wonderkid Diego Leon, who was signed from Cerro Porteno.

However, United manager Amorim could still see further signings arrive at the Premier League club ahead of the summer transfer window closing in September.

Wayne Rooney’s assessment of Man Utd’s transfer window and the need for one more major signing at a minimum

Manchester United have been tipped to sign a new midfielder and a new shot-stopper, despite the 2025-26 Premier League season being right around the corner.

Ruben Amorim’s tactical system at United is lacking further options in the midfield, with the former Sporting CP head coach lacking an alternative defensive midfielder.

Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day, Wayne Rooney has argued that Ineos and Sir Jim Ratcliffe need to head back into the window and sign a “solid” midfielder.

“I still would like to see them sign a… go and get a solid midfield player who can help control games for them, but also help them build up play,” he said.

BBC pundit Danny Murphy interjected during Rooney’s assessment and suggested that the Red Devils already have a player suited for that role with Manuel Ugarte.

However, United legend Rooney would double down with his feelings on his initial claim and he argued that Manuel Ugarte alone is not enough for United.

“Yeah, but I would still like one more [alongside Manuel Ugarte],” he told Danny Murphy.

Wayne Rooney breaks down the impact that a new Man Utd midfield signing would have on Bruno Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes is expected to drop into a deeper role and play in the two-man midfield pivot after the summer signings of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.

Rooney admitted that United signing a new midfielder to partner alongside Bruno Fernandes would allow the Portugal international to roam forward more freely.

“I think Bruno… I’d like to see him push forward and that allows Bruno to go forward more, so I think it’s been good signings, but I still would like to see one or two more,” he added.

The Red Devils’ pre-season summer tour concluded last weekend and United defeated Serie A outfit Fiorentina on penalties at Old Trafford in a friendly match.
