Bild chief reporter Christian Falk has cast doubt on Manchester United’s pursuit of Bayern Munich sporting director Christophe Freund.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos are in the midst of the clubs rebuild following their 25 per cent acquisition of Manchester United and are making the big decisions already.

They have already confirmed Omar Berrada as the club’s new CEO in the summer and the Moroccan will begin his stint at the club in the off season following his spell at Manchester City.

A new sporting director will be the next target for the Red Devils and the club seemingly have a list of targets that they are working through.

Freund latest

One of the names that has been linked with the role at the club is Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund.

Dan Ashworth, Dougie Freedman and Paul Mitchell are among the names who have been linked with the role but Freund has emerged as a target.

Freund has been key for Bayern and the club are reportedly happy with his performances according to Falk, writing in his column for CaughtOffside.

“It is said that Manchester United and perhaps also Liverpool FC have their eye on Christoph Freund in their search for a new sporting director,” the head of football at the BILD group wrote.

“But: FC Bayern’s new sports director just came from Red Bull Salzburg in the summer. He had previously rejected an offer from Chelsea in the past.

“Freund’s family continues to live in Salzburg. Freund is happy that his job is at a top international club and yet not far from his family. That’s why he’s not interested in the current speculation from England.”

A decision Manchester United must get right

It can’t be underestimated just how important this appointment will be for the Red Devils and it is imperative United get it right.

John Murtough was the first sporting director appointment, but he was an internal appointment and the club struggled to shake off their poor reputation.

An external appointment, who has a good reputation, would be vital for the Red Devils as they bid to become a powerful force in the transfer market, for the first time in a decade.
