Manchester United legend Gary Neville could not believe what he saw with his own two eyes after one ‘Class of ‘92’ star “literally killed” a team he played against.

Gary Neville was one of the famed Class of ‘92 members who went on to enjoy incredible success at Old Trafford under former manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The 49-year-old former Manchester United star rose through the club’s youth academy in the 1990s before breaking into the first team at Old Trafford.

Sky Sports pundit Neville spent his entire playing career at the Premier League club and under the tutelage of United legend Sir Alex Ferguson.

Neville went on to lift eight Premier League titles, two Champions League trophies, three FA Cups and three League Cups during an illustrious spell at United.

The ex-United and England right-back would later become club captain after fellow Red Devils legend Roy Keane was axed from Old Trafford in 2005.

Neville shared the pitch with several Class of ’92 players at United, including Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and Phil Neville.

Man Utd legend Neville on Class of ’92 star

Speaking on The Overlap, Gary Neville recalled the occasion when he first saw fellow United legend Ryan Giggs play and how he was “shocked” by what he did on the pitch.

Giggs, much like Neville, was one of the Class of ’92 stars who rose to prominence under Sir Alex Ferguson and spent his entire career at Old Trafford.

Neville recalled that he saw Giggs take apart Lilleshall and he waxed lyrical about the impact that the 50-year-old Welshman’s performance had on him at the time.

“The most shocked I’ve ever been at seeing a player [for the] first time was Ryan Giggs at 15 playing against Lilleshall,” he said.

“I was [a] sub for United’s Under-15s against Lilleshall, he absolutely killed them, I mean, literally killed them.

“I might have been a year younger and I thought, ‘What the hell, I’ve never seen anything like that,’ so Giggs was the one time I’ve ever been shocked in my life at a player. I thought that’s ridiculous.”

Beckham on why Class of ’92 succeeded

David Beckham recalled his own experience of rising through the ranks at United and how the prominent players from the Class of ’92 developed at Old Trafford.

The 49-year-old former England captain attributed some of the success to the legendary former United players who helped them “evolve” in the first team.

Speaking to Classic Football Shirts in 2023, he said: “Obviously, we were so successful [as a youth team] but when we all stepped up to go into the first team, the reason we were so successful was because we had Mark Hughes, Bryan Robson, Steve Bruce, Gary Pallister… All of these great players, Roy Keane, to help us evolve.

“We were successful as a youth team, but once we stepped up, we needed the other players with experience to teach us.”
