Gary Neville spots worrying signs from Manchester United players away from Old Trafford

Manchester United turned in another disappointing performance on Saturday evening, recording a 2-2 draw away at Bournemouth.

We have become all too used to seeing United turn in perplexing performances.

United were dire in the first half against Liverpool but came up with two moments of quality in the second half to draw 2-2.

Saturday’s clash with Bournemouth saw United concede two soft goals but come from behind twice to again secure a 2-2 draw.

United’s performance levels vary so wildly, not just from week to week but from half to half and even in 10 to 15 minute intervals.

Erik ten Hag hasn’t been able to solve this problem all season long and with Ineos – who will value performance levels very highly – coming in, the Dutchman is not safe.

Gary Neville on Manchester United away displays

One of the curiosities has been United’s away performances as we saw a decent run of wins on the road against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Aston Villa and Luton Town in February.

United then lost at Manchester City and were genuinely awful at Brentford before collapsing to a 4-3 defeat at Chelsea.

Saturday’s performance wasn’t much better in truth and Gary Neville has now slammed United players.

Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, Neville suggested that he is done with talking about the attitude and body language of United players.

Neville feels that he has said all there is to say on that topic but did highlight some problems away from home.

Neville feels that some United players have ‘switched off’ away from home and aren’t trying as hard as they could.

The former right back claims that the Old Trafford crowd won’t let players get away with half-hearted displays but some players are downing tools on the road.

“There’s nothing left to say about some of the league performance that we’re witnessing and some of the things that we’re watching,” said Neville. “The tweets and the likes and the body language, all that stuff – we’ve said it so many times before, there’s no point going over that again.”

“The performance levels in the league have gone, they’re not going to change now; what we’re seeing from Manchester United is what we’re going to get for the rest of the season. Players have almost, in some ways I think, switched off it feels like, in the league, away from home at times. At home they turn it on because they have to because there’s 75,000 people there who won’t allow them to get away with it,” he added.

United’s away games to come

The end of the season is in sight but United do still have a couple of away trips to come.

After home games against Sheffield United and Burnley, United will head to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace on the 6th of May.

United end the campaign away from home too, taking on Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium.

We also have to point out the FA Cup semi-final against Coventry City at Wembley Stadium, a game which United simply have to turn up for away from home.

United fans will not accept such a lethargic display at Wembley and defeat to a Championship side – even a dangerous one like Coventry – would leave supporters truly furious after a frustrating season.
