It has been a busy summer for Manchester United, bringing in four new signings to bolster Ruben Amorim’s squad.
Ruben Amorim will be hoping for a bright start to the 2025/26 season after enduring an incredibly difficult first six months as Manchester United head coach.
The Portuguese coach is fully aware that he has used up a lot of credit in his first season, but this will be his first full campaign as head coach, with a full pre-season behind most of the squad.
United’s new signings include Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Diego Leon and Benjamin Sesko. It remains to be seen if Ineos have the funding to provide more, although it is believed that Amorim is targeting a new midfielder before transfer deadline day.
The new signings show that emphasis was put on improving the attacking department, which suggests Amorim is happy with the defence he assembled last season. They were asked to switch from a back four to a back three in Amorim’s initial weeks at the club.
Only time will tell if the new signings will be quick to settle into their new surroundings.
Gary Neville approves Man Utd summer signings
Former United captain Gary Neville admits he would have “snapped your hand off” at the end of last season for the forward line the club has assembled this summer.
Neville is surprised by how much money United have had available to them in the summer.
“If you said to me after that Europa League final defeat to Spurs that ManchesterUnited would have a forward line of those three that they’ve signed, I’d take that, I’d have snapped your hand off,” Neville told Sky Sports, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News.
“I didn’t think they had £200 million to spend. So the fact they’ve signed those three players is good.
“I like the profile of those players, whether they settle in now is obviously the big question. Two of them are proven Premier League players, although they’ve got to step up a level.
“Mbeumo is quite solid, he’s robust, he’s played at Premier League level. He and Cunha know the Premier League, they’ve been to all the grounds, there’s no shocks for them.
“And Sesko up front. He’s young, he’s got potential but can he get off to a good start? That’s important for him.”
The new signings may spell danger for the future of Alejandro Garnacho and Antony, but change was needed and Amorim has landed multiple targets this summer.
It was needed because United scored just 44 goals in the Premier League last season. They finished the campaign with a negative goal difference of -10, with Rasmus Hojlund facing more criticism than a lot of his teammates.
Sesko is expected to provide the goals this season after scoring 21 goals in all competitions for RB Leipzig last term. It remains to be seen if he is the final piece in the jigsaw for the Reds, but fans will be hoping he offers the presence of a new out-and-out striker.
Who are United being linked with signing next?
It looks like the attention has turned to strengthening the midfield.
Amorim is understood to want an athletic-type midfielder to help provide more intensity in the middle of the pitch.
One name being linked with a move to Old Trafford is Brighton’s Carlos Baleba.
Baleba would require a huge transfer fee and it may be a deal United revisit further down the line.
