Gary Neville provides damning verdict on Manchester United after latest defeat

Gary Neville has admonished this Manchester United team and believes the players will continue to ‘let you down’.

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United suffered their 13th defeat in all competitions during their rather lacklustre 2-0 defeat to West Ham United at the London Stadium.

It was a game of few chances for the Red Devils with Alejandro Garnacho squandering the best chance of the match with his tame side-footed effort being kept out easily.

The pressure is back on Ten Hag after a draw against Liverpool provided the Dutchman with some respite but that now appears to have gone again.

Neville on United

Speaking to Sky Sports following Liverpool’s 1-1 draw against Arsenal, former United right-back Gary Neville gave his damning verdict on the current state of affairs at Old Trafford.

“It doesn’t surprise me. I didn’t get carried away when they played against Liverpool because I thought Liverpool were below par. United were relatively poor in possession,” Neville told his Sky Sports podcast.

“But they showed resilience and you always have to respect a draw at Anfield. Now, what we see from this team, and I don’t just mean under his manager, is pretty much the same. You can’t trust them.

“They will let you down when they give you a glimmer of hope that they might be on track, they go lose a game they shouldn’t. They have Aston Villa on Boxing Day but could lose against Nottingham Forest four days later.

“That’s how daft it is and that’s just what we watch. Inconsistency is a really bad trait in all walks of life, you want to be reliable and consistent. It’s really important.

United’s inconsistency

Every time the Red Devils look to be turning a corner with a positive result, they come crashing back down to earth with a result that makes you question the players and the manager.

This is another one of those results that you could put alongside the defeats against Newcastle United and FC Copenhagen.

The pressure is building but this team just doesn’t seem to have the metal and the determination to turn games around when things go against them.

A heavy defeat to Unai Emery’s Aston Villa could well be the final nail in the coffin for the Dutchman.
