Gary Neville names the two Man Utd games that broke his heart as a fan

Gary Neville has named two Manchester United games that stung the most as a fan – not including matches from his playing career.

Spending his entire 19-year professional career at Old Trafford, Gary Neville captained Manchester United as a boyhood fan.

Neville joined United’s academy in 1991 and captained a brilliant young side to FA Youth Cup glory in 1992. He made his debut in the same year against Torpedo Moscow.

Eventually establishing himself as Sir Alex Ferguson’s first-choice right back, Neville made 602 appearances for United. He won eight Premier League titles, three FA Cups, two Champions Leagues, three League Cups, one Intercontinental Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Gary Neville reflects on the toughest matches as a Man Utd fan

Neville spent most of his life at Old Trafford, but he has always been a United fan.

His career was largely successful, but not without some setbacks and disappointing results.

It must be completely different now as a retired footballer to watch those hard moments, mostly because Neville and his former teammates can’t impact them like they did yesteryear.

Neville has answered a range of questions for The Overlap’s YouTube channel, including one on the most heartbreaking matches he has watched as a fan.

The answer includes United and Salford City matches.

“As a fan? United losing to Villarreal with Ole,” Neville said.

“United losing to Tottenham with Amorim.

“Salford losing the playoff final to Notts County.”

Unsurprisingly, the two United games Neville referred to were the two Europa League final defeats suffered in recent years.

At least United are back in the big time for the upcoming season, and Michael Carrick’s side will be competing in the Champions League.

Gary Neville is not happy with FIFA over World Cup arrangements

England’s last-16 clash with Mexico could be rearranged in the days leading up to the match.

This has led to Neville blasting FIFA for the confusion caused by the uncertainty surrounding kick-off following suggestions it could be moved forward by six hours.

It comes as a consideration of disruptive weather conditions and the prospect of flooding in Mexico City.

“I would find it disruptive as a player,” Neville told ITV Sport.

“Conditions are huge for England, playing at 12pm in Mexico vs playing at 6pm, it’s very different, for our players, it’s worse, let’s be clear.

“It’s a sporting disadvantage to England, there’s a sporting integrity issue here. I’ve never seen a League Two game moved back, Fifa are just willy nilly making it up and moving a game, it feels strange.

“You can put fan safety at the heart of it, this is a stadium that has had this type of conditions before, they have a procedure to deal with it.

“I was there when my brother was managing Inter Miami. It can be disrupted for an hour, they go underneath, they get shelter. To move a game two days out, I’ve never seen that at any level of football ever.”
