‘Somebody who can…’ Gary Neville names the only two managers he would appoint over Michael Carrick

Gary Neville has suggested that there are currently just two managers in world football that he would swap for Michael Carrick at Manchester United.

Over the past four months, Gary Neville has shared plenty of verdicts on managers he thinks should be appointed by Manchester United this summer.

In January, Neville named Eddie Howe as his outstanding candidate, which was an eyebrow-raising selection considering the evidence of Newcastle not being up to scratch.

Since then, Neville has backed Michael Carrick after completely writing him off to begin with. But the former United right-back still has two names above the United interim head coach.

Gary Neville picks two managers to be considered over Michael Carrick

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast this week, Neville has provided an updated view on his thoughts on the managerial situation at Old Trafford.

This involves picking just two names he would prefer to Carrick.

“If Luis Enrique and Carlo Ancelotti become available, I do think Manchester United should go on to appoint a manager who’s won the Champions League, titles in different countries, and have somebody who can handle the scrutiny of the job.

“If they’re going into the Glasner and Iraola stuff and Fabregas, I don’t believe they should appoint those. So Michael [Carrick] should get it if they don’t get a world-class manager.”

This stance is much better than Neville’s desire for Howe to be appointed, with the two names arguably the most prestigious and qualified for the job from those available right now in the managerial market.

Should Luis Enrique be Manchester United’s top manager target in 2026?

Luis Enrique and Carlo Ancelotti both look unlikely for United

It is hard to disagree with Neville on this occasion, because he has simply picked the two best options on the market.

But for Carrick, there is a positive in that neither appears likely.

Arguably the best manager in the world right now, Enrique seems completely happy at PSG, as he looks set to win a second successive Champions League title.

A new contract in Paris seems the most likely outcome for Enrique.

Meanwhile, Ancelotti looks set to remain at Brazil beyond this summer’s World Cup.

These two world-class managers being off the table means that Carrick is the best option for United.
