Gary Neville says Fred has been Manchester United Player of the Year aside from Cristiano Ronaldo and David de Gea.

United cancelled the end of season awards ceremony but the trophy still needs to be handed out and Ronaldo and de Gea are the outstanding candidates.

In an interview with United’s official website, Neville said those two are the leading contenders, but that Fred has been the rest of the rest.

Neville says de Gea should scoop the award, which would be the fifth time he has done that in his time at the club.

Neville shares his pick for Manchester United Player of the Year

Neville said: “How many times has David De Gea won it since Sir Alex left?

“I’m going to go for De Gea, to be honest with you. The only other two I could think of would be Fred and Ronaldo.

“We’d be in dire straits without Ronaldo’s goals but I think, without De Gea, we’d be dead!

“I could say Ronaldo… Who’s the favourite, is it Ronaldo? I’d go De Gea, Ronaldo, then Fred, in that order.”

It is an indication of United’s season that it is slim pickings in terms of who is going to win the Player of the Year award.

It was the right decision to cancel the awards celebration, because there has not been much to celebrate this campaign.

De Gea and Ronaldo are streets ahead of the rest and they have both made so many match-winning contributions, scooping the vast majority of the Player of the Month awards.
