Gary Neville hints at wanting ‘highly qualified’ sporting director at Manchester United

Manchester United fans have had enough – including Gary Neville.

Manchester United suffered yet another agonizing defeat last night. This time it was Newcastle United that Erik ten Hag‘s team succumbed to.

It was made even worse by the fact that this definitely was not a first-string Eddie Howe side. Newcastle’s second, even third side absolutely tore apart the Red Devils.

United fans are growing increasingly frustrated, including Gary Neville, who went on a furious rant today which hints at his choice of Manchester United sporting director.

Gary Neville hints at ideal Man Utd sporting director

Taking to X, Neville said the following:

On my way up to the gantry last night, I bumped into Dan Ashworth. He transformed the FA’s structure, set Brighton up for this incredible period of success and has now built a strong foundation for the new owners at Newcastle. He’s competent, highly qualified and knows what he’s doing. Will work with his coach, recruitment team and other departments coherently and calmly.

In the last two matches, Manchester United have played two clubs that have installed proper football departments to support the team on the pitch and off it. The complete opposite of United. We haven’t got a sporting director! I used to travel up to Newcastle and feel sorry for their great fans when the energy and enthusiasm had been sapped from them under Mike Ashley.

It was painful to see. Last night we saw the Theatre of Dreams turn into the Theatre of Nothing. Every single United fan is bored and flat. On the pitch the players were in shock, the performances woeful and a manager struggling in front of our eyes. We’ve seen it before, we know how it ends and we’ve had enough.

Neville evidently making his thoughts clear amid a furious rant, but sadly – this doesn’t look like it will materialise.

Dan Ashworth is unlikely for Man Utd

Apparently, Ashworth won’t be coming to Manchester United.

It’s stated that Newcastle will fend off any interest from Old Trafford in Ashworth. He is one sporting director that Sir Jim Ratcliffe is said to be a huge fan of but any approach would be rebuffed.

Sorry Gary, looks like you’re out of luck with this potential sporting director.
