Gary Neville compares Manchester United’s Rasmus Hojlund to Darwin Nunez

Gary Neville sees real similarities between Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund and Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez.

United headed to Anfield on Sunday with even the most ardent of fans hardly expecting a positive result.

Defeats to Bournemouth and Bayern Munich had left dark clouds over United ahead of Sunday’s clash with Liverpool.

Add in last season’s 7-0 thumping at Anfield and it’s fair to say that expectations were low.

United produced a battling display though, withstanding Liverpool pressure to claim a 0-0 draw and prevent another defeat.

Gary Neville comments on ‘scruffy’ Rasmus Hojlund

Liverpool will point to their 34 shots and believe that they should have won the game.

Arguably the biggest chance of the game fell to United though as neat build-up play between Antony and Scott McTominay saw Rasmus Hojlund go in on goal.

This wasn’t an easy chance as he got in down the right side of Liverpool’s box, but he could only fire straight at Alisson.

Hojlund is still waiting for his first Premier League goal and Gary Neville struck a comparison that some United fans may not like too much.

Former United right back Neville told Sky Sports (17/12, 7:30pm) that he sees real similarities between Hojlund and Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez.

United fans love to mock Nunez but Neville thinks both he and Hojlund are ‘scruffy’ in front of goal.

Neville did highlight that Hojlund is younger and a little behind Nunez in his development but believes that the United striker is a long way off being the finished product for the money spent on him.

“I think there’s a similarity at the moment… I mean, Hojlund’s young, between him and Nunez,” said Neville. “They’re just a little bit scruffy, aren’t they? You talk about the money that has been paid for them, they’re not the finished article by a long stretch,” he added.

Hojlund has more time on his side than Nunez

Yes, Hojlund a little unpolished right now.

It’s not even two years since Hojlund was flogged by FC Copenhagen to Sturm Graz, yet here he is leading the line for United.

This was a signing with the long term in mind and whilst we can understand the expectation that comes with his huge transfer fee. United should have some patience.

The biggest difference between Hojlund and Nunez is that the Liverpool man is 24 now.

Nunez’s erratic finishing should be developing by now but we still aren’t seeing it even in his mid-20’s.

Hojlund is only 20 and has shown enough encouraging signs in the Champions League for us to believe that he will become a clinical striker down the line.
