Gary Neville baffled after seeing ‘weird’ reaction from ex-Man Utd defender on Monday

Gary Neville has been left baffled after seeing former Manchester United ace Sergio Reguilon in action for Brentford on Monday night.

United’s left back situation has been a nightmare all season.

From Tyrell Malacia’s never-ending injury problems to Luke Shaw repeatedly picking up issues since August, United have struggled in that area.

United took Sergio Reguilon on loan from Tottenham Hotspur with the option to send him back to North London in January.

The Spaniard never really got going at Old Trafford and was sent back to Spurs, who in-turn loaned him to Brentford for the rest of the season.

Gary Neville on Sergio Reguilon

Reguilon has been playing regularly for Brentford, filling in for injured left wing back Rico Henry.

The Spaniard recently picked up an assist in a win over Wolverhampton Wanderers but didn’t impress Gary Neville on Monday night.

Reguilon lined up against West Ham United, falling to a 4-2 defeat at the London Stadium.

One moment in the 54th minute saw Reguilon go right through the back of Mohammed Kudus, giving away a silly free-kick on the touchline.

Reguilon, who was already on a yellow card, couldn’t believe that he had been penalised but his incredulity only baffled Neville.

Neville told Sky Sports that Reguilon’s tackle was ‘absolutely ridiculous’ and felt his reaction was simply ‘weird’ as he failed to understand that you can’t just go through the back of a player.

“It’s almost like it’s a massive shock to Reguilon that when he goes through someone from behind, it’s a foul,” said Neville. “You can never win the ball, it’s an absolutely ridiculous angle to challenge from. His reaction, is well… weird,” he added.

Erik ten Hag clearly didn’t believe in Reguilon

United are now without both Malacia and Shaw, leaving Ten Hag without a natural left back.

Some have suggested that United shouldn’t have allowed Reguilon to leave the club with Malacia’s return unknown and Shaw somewhat injury-prone.

Erik ten Hag must have simply felt that Reguilon wasn’t good enough for United and wasn’t even worth keeping around in case of another injury blow.

United’s left back situation isn’t ideal right now, but for Reguilon to be sent packing says a lot for how Ten Hag thinks of him.

Neville’s verdict on Reguilon’s defending only adds to the idea that he wasn’t cut out for an important role at United – even with injury problems a major factor.
