Gary Lineker has selected a former Manchester United man as the young manager he sees as the next big thing.

Speaking on Wednesday’s episode of The Rest Is Football, Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards had their say on their picks to be the next big British manager.

When asked who he saw as a young up and coming manager who could make the jump to a Premier League side, Lineker picked a former United man.

“I’m going to go with Kieran McKenna from Ipswich Town. I think he’s done a brilliant job with them and he’s young.” Before he added, “They’re flying at the top of the league.”

While Alan Shearer added that he is “doing a really good job.”

McKenna’s Ipswich are brilliant

Kieran McKenna is relatively new in the management game and is only now in his second full season at Ipswich.

Last season saw him guide the Farmers to the Championship as they dominated League One.

Now a level up, the same outcome has been the case as he finds his team in second place, just a point from top after seven games.

Early season form which seems to suggest that Premier League football could be in Ipswich next season.

But would McKenna be a good option for a top club?

Where could he go?

While we are aware that McKenna is likely to remain at Ipswich due to his project there which is going so well, a bigger move is inevitable if he continues in this style.

The obvious choices for him would be a return to either Tottenham Hotspurs or Manchester United in the future, the two clubs where he honed his craft.

The style of football he plays is also brilliant and would be easily to applicate to a Premier League club.

The Northern Irish manager has a bright future ahead and many United fans have already began tipping him as a future successor to Erik ten Hag.
