Gary Lineker has named four Manchester United legends in his dream five-a-side team.

Gary Lineker was tasked with picking a small side out of fellow football pundits and the Match of the Day host ended up making a team largely containing Manchester United icons from yesteryear.

Gary Lineker names his dream five-a-side team

Speaking on The Rest is Football’s YouTube channel, Lineker began with his ‘keeper: “I would certainly go with Peter Schmeichel in goal.

“He’s done a bit of punditry and I’ve worked with him many times, he’s obviously one of the greatest in terms of goalkeeping.

“I want to get some balance to the team so at the back, Rio Ferdinand, who obviously does a lot with TNT Sport and major tournaments with the BBC, he’s brilliant.

“Alan Shearer would have to be in it, he’d kill me if I didn’t put him in it.

“Probably a holding midfielder, Roy Keane would have to be in there and then maybe Paul Scholes, he does a bit. I think that’s a pretty good team.”

But after naming his side, two more great names came to mind for the former striker.

He continued: “Or maybe we could have had someone like Cesc Fabregas and I’ve just remembered someone…

“I couldn’t not have him in the team and I know I’ve gone past five players here but allow me that please: Thierry Henry of course.”

Our punditry five-a-side team

Lineker’s team was pretty good, even if he cheated somewhat by naming seven players in it rather than five.

But can we name another team using completely different players that would be able to take it on in the cage?

Wayne Rooney has been doing the punditry rounds in recent weeks as he bides his time for a return to management following his sacking from Birmingham City.

United’s record goal-scorer definitely counts so he’s going straight in up front. Likewise, Frank Lampard has also lent his hand to punditry when out of work.

Pundits for international tournaments are fertile ground, too, so in go Vincent Kompany and Patrick Vieira who both did punditry at Euro 2020.

Yes, they may all be managers by trade but we have to take what we can get.

That just leaves a goalkeeper and it’s slim pickings but Tim Howard just gets in ahead of Mark Bosnich.

So which team wins?
