England manager Gareth Southgate has opened up about why he has omitted Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount from his squad.

The Manchester United midfielder has had a tough time at Old Trafford since he decided to leave his boyhood club Chelsea for Old Trafford, for a fee in the region of £55 million.

Erik ten Hag was keen on Mason Mount and the 24-year-old was seen as the man who could take the club forward and solve the issues in the middle of the park that the Red Devils suffered last year.

However, it hasn’t worked out for the midfielder so far but he recently has improved. However, Mount has suffered another blow as he was left out of the England squad.

Southgate on Mount form

The omission of the United midfielder, who was previously a favourite of Southgate, was a question posed to the former Middlesbrough head coach.

“Physically he’s getting back up to a level,” Southgate said. “He’s been an important player for us and we like him a lot.

“But I didn’t think he’d done enough to be ahead of the others at this moment in time.”

After missing out on previous international squads due to injury, Mount now has to deal with the realisation that he has been dropped from the team.

Mount imrpoving

What is clear, however, is that after a rough start in Manchester for Mount, he is beginning to find his feet at Old Trafford.

The English midfielder’s fine corner was headed into the back of the net by Casemiro for his first assist for the club and he has looked like one of the most dangerous players for the Red Devils recently.

Against Galatasaray, too, the midfielder looked dangerous and was unfortunate not to score his first goal for the club as his seemingly goalbound effort was blocked by his own player Hannibal Mejbri.

Mount seems to be a case of when he finally nets his first goal for the club, then things will begin to click for him and he is showing promising signs of doing just that in a United shirt.
