Manchester United duo Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho have been left out of England’s squad for this month’s friendlies.
Gareth Southgate has named Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw in his squad for the matches against Switzerland and Ivory Coast.
The omission of Rashford was maybe expected given his loss of form, but no Sancho in the squad seems a massive surprise.
Speaking in his press conference, Southgate gave his explanations for overlooking the Manchester United duo.
Southgate said: “The other attacking players in the squad are slightly ahead of him (Sancho) in our feeling.
“Jadon over the last few weeks his performances have improved but it’s an area of the field we’ve got big competition for places.”
On Rashford: “It’s a difficult time for him, he’s clearly not at his best, but we know a lot about Marcus and hopefully he can rediscover the form we know he’s capable of.”
Rashford’s omission is the latest blow in a string of setbacks that have happened to the Manchester United academy graduate this season.
The 24-year-old will be hoping to regroup during the international break and hopefully return recharged and ready to respond to the critics on the 2nd April against Leicester City.
