Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez is set to undergo surgery on the foot injury he sustained in the Europa League this past April.
The original metatarsal injury curtailed Lisandro Martinez‘s season and saw him miss the FA Cup final.
Martinez returned for pre-season, but aggravated his injury in Manchester United’s fourth Premier League game of the season against Arsenal.
The Athletic report Martinez is set to undergo surgery to ‘cure the problem once and for all’.
This could rule him out for the remainder of 2023, with an estimated three months out.
And the one thing United don’t want to do, is to rush Martinez, and risk doing further harm.

United handling under question
After the Arsenal game, Martinez was permitted to fly out with Argentina for their World Cup qualifiers.
He did not play in either game, and could have been better served by staying at Carrington.
Martinez then started against Brighton and Bayern Munich, but did not look himself. United conceded seven goals in those two games.
The Mail reported Martinez required painkillers to play in these two games. Now heading for surgery, it doesn’t seem like it was worth the risk, and there is a fear that playing through the pain has simply made the injury worse.
Manchester United fans react
Manchester United fans are unhappy with the way this has all been handled by the club, expressing anger on social media.
One fan wrote: “Shocking post injury management by the club…what a mess.”
Another posted: “Another poor decision made by the medical department. He was clearly not right and he should have been taken out and given the recovery he needed.”
A third fan wrote: “Someone needs to be fired for how we’ve handled Lisandro Martinez’s rehab.”
A fourth supporter added: “This club deals very badly when player injured. Rushing players back. This medical staff should be sacked.”
A further comment added: “This is utter mismanagement. i will blame ETH & the whole medical team. No wonder we have been bad in defence when our main defender is not well. Shambles.”
