Frenkie de Jong‘s representatives have rejected Barcelona’s initial offer to resolve the deferred wages the midfielder is owed.
That’s according to the Independent who claim the Spanish giants have ‘pressed upon’ the 25-year-old that the club “needs” him to go.

The former Ajax starlet has remained firm in his stance that he wants to remain at the Nou Camp, especially as he is owed over £14m in deferred wages.

The same report from the Independent states: “Barcelona have made an initial offer to try and resolve the matter, and get him to go to Manchester United in a £70m-plus deal, but that was still over £8.5m less than the figure De Jong is owed.”
Barcelona’s need to move their number 21 on has only intensified given their pursuit of Sevilla defender Jules Kounde.
The Catalans are hoping to hijack Chelsea’s deal to sign the Frenchman, but they are pleading for patience form the centre-back as they bid to resolve their financial muddle.
Given that Barcelona are negotiating with De Jong’s representatives about coming to an agreement regarding the owed deferred wages is a positive sign.

But with there still being an £8.5m gap between the two parties, the long-running saga will continue to rumble on.
Given that De Jong is Erik ten Hag’s priority target, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Barcelona ask Manchester United to pay the difference in the midfielder’s owed wages.
Ten Hag is desperate to reunite with his former midfielder, whose appearances during Barcelona’s pre-season tour in America have come at centre-back, this summer and he sees the 44-time Netherlands international as the fulcrum of his Old Trafford rebuild.
