Frenkie de Jong’s proposed move to Manchester United from Barcelona has stalled, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The ongoing transfer saga surrounding the Netherlands international shows no sign of reaching a quick resolution.

The Red Devils have been engulfed in negotiations for ten weeks with the La Liga giants, but with United’s first Premier League game only three-and-a-half weeks away, De Jong is no closer to a reunion with Erik ten Hag.

United’s new manager identified the former Ajax star as his primary target during the transfer window, but the 25-year-old has been hesitant about a move to Old Trafford due to the Reds not being in the Champions League.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has reiterated that he wants the ball-playing midfielder to remain at the Nou Camp, but only on the condition that De Jong is willing to reduce his wages to help the club’s ongoing financial struggles.

The Telegraph report he is owed £17 million by the club after deferring part of his wages during the pandemic.

Manchester United chiefs Richard Arnold and John Murtough were spotted in Barcelona earlier this week as the pair desperately try and make a breakthrough in signing Ten Hag’s number one target.

Manchester United have set a deadline for the signing of De Jong who returned to pre-season training earlier this week. Talksport report United have told Barcelona they want the deal done by Friday.

But Romano has revealed that De Jong’s agents Ali Dursun, who represents United’s sole signing of the transfer window so far Tyrell Malacia, and Hasan Cetinkaya have informed Barcelona that their client has no intention of leaving the club.

The pair also reportedly told the club that they will not be accepting any wage reduction.

As a result of the latest development in the Frenkie de Jong saga, Manchester United’s proposed move is now stalling and it remains to be seen what any of the involved parties’ next move will be.

But one thing is for sure this won’t be the last twist in the ongoing saga.
