Frenkie de Jong admits clashing with Barcelona over Manchester United move

Manchester United’s summer transfer business revolved around Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

And this turned out to be a bit of a problem, considering Frenkie de Jong had absolutely no intention of leaving Barcelona.

United’s persistence in trying to sign De Jong made everybody wonder if the midfielder had privately given a signal he wanted to sign for the club. It didn’t seem like this was the case.

The Red Devils eventually shelved the pursuit of De Jong in mid-August, signing Casemiro instead after a brief pursuit of Adrien Rabiot.

De Jong admits clashing with Barcelona

The potential move for De Jong stemmed from Barcelona’s desire to sell, due to their need to balance the books financially.

The Dutchman dug in his heels, despite The Athletic reporting Manchester United actually agreed a fee with Barcelona in July at £63 million.

Now speaking at a press conference on international duty with the Netherlands, reported by The Mirror, De Jong admits clashing with Barcelona over his future.

He said: “I always wanted to stay at Barcelona and this is why I always remained calm in the summer.

“I can’t give too much details away. But look.. the club has it’s own idea’s and I have my own idea’s too and sometimes this clashes with each other. But at the end of the day things went okay.”

De Jong has struggled to hold down a regular spot in the Barcelona side, starting three of six La Liga games and one of two Champions League matches.

He at least has not been totally frozen out, and time will tell whether he regrets not rejoining Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, who he worked with at Ajax.

It is very unlikely United return for him now. De Jong will live by his decision to stay put. It doesn’t sound like he regrets it, he backs himself to succeed. Now he just has to show the world he was right.
