Free agent defender Jonny Evans has been spotted training with Manchester United after leaving Leicester City.

Erik ten Hag may be in the market for another defender this summer.

We have all seen the links to Axel Disasi and Kim Min-jae in recent months but an arrival doesn’t appear imminent.

United still have Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof and it’s hard to see any of them leaving now.

Maybe if United can move on Harry Maguire this summer then a new centre back can come in, which would set the rumour mill off again.

One player we didn’t expect to be hearing about is Jonny Evans, who is now back training with United…

Jonny Evans makes Carrington return

The Manchester Evening News report that free agent Evans has been back training with United in recent days.

Evans is without a club at the moment having left Leicester City upon their relegation from the Premier League.

The 35-year-old came up in the United ranks having moved over from Northern Ireland and ended up making nearly 200 appearances for the club.

Evans was sold to West Bromwich Albion in 2015 and after impressing for the Baggies, Leicester City pounced in 2018.

Evans fared well away from United and was a solid Premier League defender but may now be coming towards the end of his career.

Just 31 Premier League appearances over the last two seasons isn’t ideal for Evans and he is now seeking a fresh start.

Don’t expect to see Manchester United signing Evans

That new start is unlikely to come with United though, even if he is back training with Erik ten Hag’s side.

It’s suggested that Evans has been training with both the United first team and the youth setup.

United are happy for former players to come back and keep fit if they need to, whilst Evans’ experience is claimed to have been valuable.

Evans will of course hope to get fixed up with a club sooner rather than later but he will also be comfortable staying with United for as long as he is allowed.

Amid rumoured interest from Celtic, Evans will be eyed up elsewhere and his time training with United will be very valuable.
