Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League after a defeat to Barcelona.
The Red Devils were beaten by the better team, but contributed to their own downfall too.
Marcus Rashford missed an early chance, before Lionel Messi took over.
One of the more divisive players in United’s midfield was Fred.

The Brazilian was United’s most expensive signing last summer and has struggled to make an impact.
Against Barcelona last night he could not be faulted for effort.
Fred managed 100 touches, 24 more than any other United player.
Paul Pogba had 58 by comparison and Scott McTominay 53.
Fred completed 89 per cent of his passes, and made more tackles and interceptions (7) combined than McTominay and Pogba.

Being the best of a bad bunch is little consolation of course, and the problem with his performance was, Fred offered nothing offensively.
He had no shots and created no chances, and despite his defensive work, Barcelona netted three times.
Fan reaction
Here is a look at the reaction to Fred’s performance…
Getting better with each game. Could be our Kante. Putting Pogba to shame

Best of the midfield 3. Always showed for the ball, looked willing. Bigger name players need calling out for not showing up tonight

One of the better players, like how he doesn’t hide. Hopefully with a season under his belt we might see a different player next year.

Still feel there is a mistake coming every game 🤨

Difficult first season but didn’t hide tonight. Let’s see what next season brings.

He’s very under appreciated! Adds tenacity creativity and holds the midfield well! Makes mistakes but will only improve! Attackers need to make more runs upfront to help the midfield
