Wout Weghorst may not have scored but he made a valuable contribution to Manchester United winning the Carabao Cup.

The Netherlands international tested goalkeeper Loris Karius twice, with his most important contribution the pass for Marcus Rashford’s goal.

This goal doubled United’s lead, and was Weghorst’s second assist since arriving at the club. He has contributed to plenty more with his hard work off the ball.

The Netherlands international has now made it a loan spell to remember, picking up his first trophy in English football.

De Boer praises Weghorst

Weghorst’s success has been noted in his homeland. Despite his lack of goals, just one so far, his performances have been praised.

Dutch legend Frank de Boer spoke to Viaplay, reported by Voetbal International, to praise the on loan striker.

He said: “He is present, works extremely hard as always. You can never say anything about that.

“He goes after it again, is even right back… Ten Hag also expects that of him.

“Just work hard. You have to do that even if you don’t score and he does that one hundred percent.”

Weghorst’s first ever trophy

Wout Weghorst looked emotional at the final whistle and during the trophy celebrations and was determined to soak up the occasion.

He had good reason to. This was the first trophy he had ever won during his professional career.

Now he has had a taste, he wants more. Weghorst told MUTV: “Today was the first one, hopefully; we’ve got three more to go.” he told MUTV.

“We have to enjoy this one and celebrate it but on the other side, we keep on going, we’re hungry for more.”

He did net in the Carabao Cup semi-finals, so in addition to his assist, Weghorst can really feel as though he contributed to this trophy.

Weghorst is doing a good job fitting into Erik ten Hag’s side, and the goals will surely follow. If he can add more, he might just earn a permanent move to the club.
