Mbeumo is a nominee for the Premier League Player of the Month award, but one of the players he is competing with could have been his teammate had he moved to Old Trafford four years ago when he was a reported target.
Ex-Man Utd target Nordi Mukiele starring at Sunderland
United were linked with many players when Ralf Rangnick was appointed interim coach.
Multiple reports at the time suggested Rangnick would raid his former club, RB Leipzig, but the current Austria national team manager didn’t last long enough at the club to influence transfers.
That was when former RB Leipzig right-back Nordi Mukiele emerged as a United target.
United’s right-backs at the time included Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Diogo Dalot and Ethan Laird.
Mukiele would leave Leipzig for Paris Saint-Germain in 2022 before being sent to Bayer Leverkusen on loan in 2024.
However, the 27-year-old signed for Sunderland in the summer, and he is competing with Mbeumo for the Premier League Player of the Month award.
Mukiele has been an important figure in defence for Sunderland since their return to the Premier League, scoring the opener in their recent win over Wolves and helping keep a clean sheet.
The French defender has played at both centre-back and right-back to show his versatility in Régis Le Bris’ side.
Other nominees include Erling Haaland, Matty Cash, Bruno Guimaraes, Junior Kroupi, Igor Thiago and Jurrien Timber.
How did Nordi Mukiele perform at PSG?
Mukiele showed his versatility as a defender during his time at PSG, but he struggled to cement a place in the team due to injuries.
He spent two seasons in Paris and won several trophies, including the Ligue 1 title in 2023 and 2024.
In terms of appearances, Mukiele featured 35 times in Ligue 1 across his two seasons at the club.
Mukiele also had to deal with stiff competition from Achraf Hakimi at right-back.
