Manchester United lost 3-2 to Galatasaray in the Champions League this week after twice taking the lead.
Where did it go wrong? Well, the game was picked with individual errors from Manchester United, along with the defence not operating properly as a unit.
There was also a total lack of concentration from the team, twice after taking the lead, conceding equalisers within minutes.
Manager Erik ten Hag did not get it spot on either. Here is a look at three decisions he got wrong…
Swapping Hannibal for Eriksen
Erik ten Hag took off Hannibal Mejbri at half-time to bring on Christian Eriksen. Explaining the decision, he said he wanted to make this switch for the Dane’s passing ability.
And while Eriksen was good on the ball, Hannibal offers so much more without it.
Surely, in the second half, when players tire, Hannibal’s relentless running and energy would have an even bigger impact than he would in the first half?
United needed Hannibal to wear Galatasaray down. Eriksen managed to win 0 duels during his time on the pitch, while Hannibal won five.
Keeping faith with Victor Lindelof
Victor Lindelof is not in good form right now and there was a real case to bring in Harry Maguire or Jonny Evans after the Swede’s poor display against Crystal Palace.
Lindelof was weak against Galatasaray, failing to win a single tackle. He would be more use at present filling in at full-back.
Sofyan Amrabat at left-back again
OK, so we have seen Sofyan Amrabat fill in successfully at left-back against Crystal Palace’s back-ups. At Champions League level, it is a different story.
United should have played a centre-back at left-back, one who is more defensively minded, who would be better in tune with the back four.
Galatasaray’s winner came after Amrabat played Mauro Icardi onside, failing to push up with the rest of his new teammates.
It would be harsh to pin that on him. His manager selected him to play out of position, despite seeing his vulnerability there at the weekend.
No tactical change after Casemiro red card
This really was the big one, the critical moment Manchester United lost the game.
After Casemiro was sent off, there was a huge gap in the Manchester United midfield. United were left with a duo of Christian Eriksen and Mason Mount holding the fort. Predictably, Galatasaray scored minutes later.
Ten Hag should have done something. He could have brought on Scott McTominay. Or he could have pushed Amrabat into midfield, and brought on a defender to fill in at left-back.
Doing absolutely nothing was a recipe for disaster, and it was no surprise to see Ten Hag’s inaction punished by a buoyant Galatasaray.
