Former Manchester United defender Guillermo Varela has signed with Brazilian side Flamengo, the club announced.
Varela signed with Manchester United in 2013, before going out on loan to Real Madrid. He then made his United debut under Louis van Gaal.
Despite showing flashes of promise, Varela made only 11 appearances for United and after a disappointing loan at Eintracht Frankfurt, he was re-sold to former club Penarol in 2017.
Now after a spell back in Europe, Varela has signed on loan with Flamengo for the upcoming season.

Guillermo Varela signs with Flamengo
Varela joins Flamengo on loan from Dynamo Moscow after playing 42 games for the Russian side.
Lance reports he is expected to terminate his contract with Dynamo at the end of the loan and sign permanently for Flamengo.
The 29-year-old has seven international caps for Uruguay to his name over the course of his career. This included a recall to the national side in June.
Before his move to Russia, Varela had returned to Europe with Danish side FC Copenhagen, where he played against Manchester United in the 2020 Europa League quarter-final.
During his career he has won two titles in Uruguay with Penarol and one in Denmark with FC Copenhagen, and is now looking for success at Andreas Pereira’s former loan side in Brazil.
