Former Manchester United ace linked with Prem return 18 months after Old Trafford exit

Former Manchester United ace Jesse Lingard is reportedly returning to the Premier League with Everton on a short-term deal.

That is according to talkSPORT, The Toffees expected to seal a six-month deal with the England international imminently.

Jesse Lingard, like former Manchester United team-mates David de Gea and Eric Bailly (at least, until he returned to Villarreal a few days ago), found himself without a club as Christmas day arrived.

Lingard, who was let go by the Red Devils in the summer of 2022, suffered a similar fate 12 months later after an ill-fated stint at Nottingham Forest. Now, after wasting half a season twiddling his thumbs, and after a brief dalliance with Saudi Arabia and former employers West Ham, Lingard appears to have been offered the opportunity to rebuild his career in England’s top flight.

Jesse Lingard offered Everton deal

Everton are reportedly offering the 31-year-old a deal until the end of the current campaign. New Year, new Lingard? That remains to be seen. But it certainly seems like a case of ‘New Year, New Club’ for a man who’s career at the highest level of English football appeared to be over when he left Nottingham Forest via the back door over the summer.

Interestingly, Everton boss Sean Dyche has plenty of history with Lingard.

The Man United academy graduate denied his Burnley side a famous win at Old Trafford when he scored a dramatic, last-gasp equaliser in December 2017. Two years later, Dyche accused Lingard of simulation after he won a contentious penalty in another comeback for the Red Devils against The Clarets.

‘I just don’t like it when there’s a touch on the shoulder and their legs don’t work. But it’s modern football,” Dyche sighed.

“I’m not saying he (Lingard) does it all the time. But they’re strong these lads. And how come their legs don’t work (when they get touched on the shoulder)? I don’t know.”

Lingard, then, can perhaps expect a bit of gentle ribbing from his new boss should that Everton deal become official in the coming days.
